Softer Footprints

How can you help to leave a softer footprint? With all the big companies talking about their carbon offsets, solar and wind power, and trash-to-energy techniques, how can you really make a difference? I’ve compiled a list of small steps that I take so that you can see just how much of a difference we can all make. Just imagine if we added up yours and mine, and your neighbor’s, and your friends, and your friend’s neighbor, and.........

Investment of Time = Investment of Dollars

Habitat for Humanity – I participated in an All-Women’s Build where we built two duplex dwellings for four underprivileged families. With just one Saturday a month of my time, four families now each have a home.

NH Made – This organization promotes locally made products & services. I served on the Board of Trustees for 3 years and helped to spread the word on the benefits of buying local.

New Generation - Located in Greenland, NH, this is a shelter for pregnant women and mothers with young children. I donate product nearing the end of its shelf life as well as any new offering that doesn’t sell as well as expected to these less fortunate families.

Packing Materials

I have never purchased boxes or packing materials. I rely on neighbors, family and friends to give us any they will not be using. I reuse all the boxes I receive our ingredients and goods in for our outgoing shipments.

Office Supplies

I have never purchased pads of paper. All of our scratch paper comes from misprinted documents. When our supplies get large enough, we then shred those same pieces of paper and use that for our packing material.

I recycle all ink and toner cartridges. Your local post office has a supply of postage paid envelopes especially for these. And did you know that for every toner cartridge recycled, 2 quarts of oil are kept out of landfills? That’s amazing!

Out of date/Expired carrier oils

Occasionally we over buy our ingredients and they, too, have a shelf life. We donate all of our out-of-date carrier oils to a friend who has an automobile that runs on vegetable oil.

You can see that if just a few individuals and small businesses joined forces for social consciousness – we’d now be Big Business!
